Outdoor Shed

A shed is often the go-to place to store lawn equipment, tools, and other seasonal items, but it can also be an easy target for thieves if it’s not properly secured. In this blog post, we will discuss ten tips for securing your shed. Read on to learn more!

10 Ways to Secure Your Shed

Install a Quality Lock

One way to secure your shed is to install a quality lock on the door. A good padlock will deter thieves and make it more difficult for them to break in. Make sure the padlock is big and strong enough that it can’t be easily cut through. This will deter criminals from trying to break in, and it will also make it more difficult for them to force their way inside.

Add a Deadbolt

What is better than one lock? Two! Add a deadbolt to the door for extra security. Again, not only will the additional security make it harder for a would-be thief to break into your shed, but the mere sight of it may be enough to cause them to look for another target.

Secure Your Windows

If you have windows in your shed, be sure to install bars or grates over them so that they can’t be easily broken. It is not uncommon for shed owners to invest in security hardware for their doors, while leaving their windows unguarded.  Consider installing window and door sensors to add an extra layer of security to your shed.

Anchor Your Shed to the Ground

If your shed is on casters or is a separate unit from its foundational support, you should invest in anchoring solutions for your shed. This will make it much more difficult for thieves to try and break in, or even worse, drive your shed away while you’re out of town.

Protect Your Shed from the Elements

You should also take steps to protect your shed from the elements. If your shed is made of wood, make sure it’s properly treated and sealed. This will help to prevent it from rot, mold, and pests. A rotting shed not only stops protecting your equipment, but it can also (depending on its state) provide an entry point for a potential burglar.

Keep Your Shed Tidy

It’s important to keep your shed tidy and free of clutter. Not only will it make your shed life less stressful, but it will also make it more difficult for burglars to hide or easily spot expensive equipment for a quick smash-and-grab. Bonus: If your shed is tidy, it will be easier for you to notice if something is missing or out of place.

Hide Your Valuables

Speaking of keeping important items out of sight. If you have any particularly valuable items in your shed, make sure to hide them away so they’re not easily visible. If you have valuable items stored in your shed, it’s also a good idea to invest in a safe. This will ensure that your belongings are well-protected in case of a break-in.

Invest in Powerful Lighting

Make sure your shed is well lit. This will again make it more difficult for thieves to operate undetected. Adding motion-activated lights around your shed will also help to keep intruders away.

Make Your Shed Less Visible

You can also deter criminals by making your shed less visible from the street. If possible, try to park your car in front of the shed or position it so that it blocks the view of the shed, trimming back any trees or shrubs that might provide cover for a thief. And, if you have a fence around your property, be sure to close and lock the gate to make it more difficult for someone to access your shed.

Get To Know Your Neighbors

This is always a good idea to enhance your home security, but it’s especially important if you have a shed. They can keep an eye on your shed for you and let you know if anything suspicious is going on. Likewise, you can help them monitor their shed’s security.

Bonus Tip: Invest in a Shed Security System

One of the top methods for protecting your shed and your belongings is by investing in a home security system. For added security, consider adding motion-sensor lights around the perimeter of the shed, or even installing a surveillance camera to monitor activity in your yard.
