One of the many reasons people get home security systems is to deter burglars from targeting their homes. But do home security systems really deter burglars? They certainly can. This blog will look at the stats that support this answer, examples that prove it, and the technology behind it.
Stats Show Home Security Systems Deter Burglars
It’s hard to argue the facts, and the statistics show that home security systems do deter burglars. According to security.org, just having a security sign in your yard alone reduces your chances of being broken into by 25%.
Got cameras? That’s even better! According to a study by the UNC Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology, about half of burglars surveyed said they found cameras to be effective deterrents.
Another UNC Charlotte study found that 83% of burglars would try to determine if an alarm was present before attempting a burglary, and 60% said they would look for another home to target if there was alarm on-site.
Examples of Alarm Systems Deterring Burglars
Time and time again we’ve seen alarm systems deterring burglars from breaking into homes and cars. In some cases, it’s the mere presence of a camera, but other times it’s the audible tone and flashing LED lights the camera releases that deters burglars from proceeding. Watch the two videos below to see real life examples of burglars being deterred from CPI alarm systems.
Technology that Deters Burglars
So, what’s the technology that deters burglars from breaking in? We refer to it as Perimeter Alert. When IVAN, CPI’s artificial intelligence, detects a person, vehicle, or object, CPI’s Perimeter Alert activates. Perimeter Alert is an audible whistle and flashing LED lights that lets the trespasser know they are being recorded. This often sends them running, as seen in the examples above.
